AI has become perhaps the most divisive topic in modern culture. Depending on who you ask, it is either the ultimate solution to every human problem or the harbinger of the end of the world, with very little middle ground in between.
I will be the first to acknowledge the dark side. The detrimental environmental effects and the ridiculous water consumption required to keep these servers humming are real. While I am sick of corporations offloading the responsibility of their mess onto the individual customer, I believe we desperately need legislators to step up with sensible laws and rules. I digress.
What I love about AI is that it helps me organize thoughts that move faster than my keyboard. My ideas often exist as a massive, connected web. AI helps me find the logical flow I am looking for. Could I do this with my own brainpower? Of course. However, the sheer mental energy required to get the sequence out correctly can kill the creative flow I find myself in at times.
I am a firm believer in "the Muse." If you have ever read The War of Art, it does an excellent job discussing this unseen force that seems to guide our creative ideas. It is like we are antennas or conduits to these ideas that are flowing in the ether, and we need the right reception to pick them up. Anything that ruins that train of thought—the Muse—can kill an idea before it ever has a chance to manifest. AI helps me keep more of those musings by letting me get them out as fast as possible. In return, it gives me a framework to work off of. It is so much easier to edit and massage a framework than it is to try to build one from scratch.
Plus, like many of you who wear a lot of hats, AI helps me keep up with the emails, especially those that need expertly crafted wordage to get a point across without offending. Answering one of these manually can take hours. That is time I could be using to do the fun stuff like researching, writing, and creating. AI has the ability to code-switch for me so I can plainly say what I want to say and get the proper message out.
The Human Element: Why the "Lab" is AI-Proof
The heart of Montessori Physical Education has absolutely nothing to do with AI. It has everything to do with what makes us human. We love to play. We observe, and we learn.
In my world, we are engineers. When a game is made, my students become the beta testers who help me refine the mechanics until the game is ready for your class. This is the human element that no algorithm can touch. I can tell a computer to analyze a lesson plan for exploits a thousand times, but it still cannot account for the real emotions that pop up or the creativity of a child who finds a way to break the game once they find an opening.
I am making games for humans, so I need humans to make them genuinely work.
I experimented with asking AI to "create a PE game about pollination" just to see what would happen. It was crap. It was not even worth testing with students because I already knew they would hate it. I wrote a blog post a long time ago about how musicians create. Some start with lyrics while others start with the music. In creating my PE lessons, I either start with a concept I want to integrate or a gameplay mechanic I want to explore. I have had wonderful brainstorming sessions where I have a mechanic but need a theme. The AI spits out several themes, one catches my eye, and then the real work begins. I research that theme, find new inspirations, and eventually head into the "Lab" to start testing with the kids.
The Experiment: AI as the Ultimate Librarian
While AI cannot replace the gym, it can help me share the work we do there. I did not ask a computer to "tell me about Montessori." I used a tool called NotebookLM to act as a curator for my own brain. I uploaded ten original blog posts that I have personally researched and written over the years to create a direct synthesis of my work.
This cinematic summary weaves together my research on Traditional Indigenous Games and their cultural significance, the specific nuances of the Planes of Development, and the vital benefits of academic integration between the classroom and the gym. This tool allowed me to take years of my own research and transform it into a visual story in a fraction of the time, bridging the gap between complex theory and digestible content without losing the integrity of the message.
AI might be a high-speed editor, but it will never replace the real-world feedback of a child in motion. Every lesson I share will always be tested and approved by real people, not a simulation. You can see the full scope of this "Lab-tested" work by browsing my collection, where I have you can find all of my free lesson downloads at the top for you to explore.
I want to hear from you. If you have been following my work for a while, does this video summary genuinely help you understand my work better? Conversely, if this is the first time you are hearing about Montessori Physical Education, what do you think of the video? Does it make my mission clear and explain how I go about creating integrated PE lesson plans?
